E-learning is more effective and cheaper
Cheaper, more effective, easily adjustable to student’s needs, feasible even in the largest organizations – e-learning providers praise education via the Internet. For the time being, small and medium enterprises seem to be oblivious to these arguments, whereas the term “e-learning” remains quite enigmatic for most of them.
- Undoubtedly, among major advantages of e-learning one can find individual education paths, lower costs of training programmes, virtually infinite possibilities with respect to the scale of educational projects as well as usage of multimedia -says Katarzyna Chojnowska, Education Division Manager at Altkom Akademia.
So far, education via Internet remains a domain of large enterprises, which were quick to see it as a solution to difficulties related to improvement of their staff qualifications as well as training organization. This form of education is becoming more and more popular in public administration.
In Poland, interest in e-learning has been growing systematically – this tendency has been observable in corporate sector since 2003 and in public administration sector since 2004. Customers are more and more aware of their needs with respect to e-learning – argues Bart?omiej Antczak, Manager of the HR Solutions Department at Incenti.
Languages prevail
Small and medium enterprises are quite slow to take up e-learning and use it very seldom, mainly for language learning. Not many realize that distance education by means of computer enables managerial trainings or acquisition of qualifications in the field of business applications usage. One of the most popular novelties arousing quite broad interest, is e-training in ... OHS.
- Since amendment of regulations in July of the previous year, companies which are obliged to train their staff in this field may use e-learning – says Szymon Janicki, Vice President of MyNetwork Polska.
Education via Internet is interactive one. Students have to acquire some part of material, accomplish successive training stages and on the top of that pass the final exam. Usually, they have teaching staff at their disposal, via computer of course. Some platforms use voice or even video transmission for communication with teachers. And that is where the similarities between traditional education and e-learning end, as the latter exploits richness of multimedia to make learning more convenient and easily acquired.
In Poland, education via Internet remains a domain of large enterprises, which were quick to find benefits related to improvement of their staff qualifications.
- For companies, e-learning means cost reduction. Following the rule - Any Time, Any Place – trainings for large groups of recipients are not so much of an organizational problem as in the case of traditional trainings – says Grzegorz Brzostowski, E-learning Consultant at Young Digital Poland.
Bright side
It is quite difficult to estimate the value of the Polish e-learning market. However, educational platform providers stress that the development rate is quite high. European e-learning market is worth approximately 4 billion dollars. Polish training providers earn their living from large enterprises, which are more and more willing to spend a lot of money on e-learning. Small and medium enterprises come to like new solutions hesitantly, which probably results form managers’ unawareness of these solutions. Training companies have no doubts that sales of educational services require considerable expenditures on the... market education.
- Low IT awareness is the most essential limitation. Of course, there is a bright side to Polish market. These are companies managed by foreign owners employing a lot of young people. What is interesting, they discern a need of constant education and qualifications improvement of their staff. Situation in public administration sector, power industry or state-owned companies is a different story. One can often hear the answer that employees have already learned the subject or are too busy at work – explains Jerzy Dur?lewicz – President of the Management at WiedzaNet.
The trainings are available both for large groups and individual employees. Their costs range from around one hundred to several thousand zlotys. Enterprises from educational or consulting sector are the main training providers. The latter used their IT competence to take up a significant part of the market. E-learning becomes popular even at the universities, which provide possibility to obtain a diploma after a few years of education via Internet. Unlike the educational process, the exams are not virtual and are held live.
Future solution
E-learning is considerably more popular among companies and inhabitants of large cities. This fact seems quite astonishing, as these groups enjoy easy access to traditional courses and trainings. In future, companies and individuals from small towns and country may take a leading position as far as e-learning usage is concerned, as this form of education may help them to minimize the distance to large cities and improve their competitiveness. Unquestionably, e-learning is the solution of the future, the popularity of which will be rising step by step and will reach small and medium enterprises as well. Nevertheless, managers and employees have to understand that this form of education is at least as effective as traditional trainings.
