Chatting with a teacher over the Net has become a standard form of education
A well-prepared e-training facilitates contact with the group and the teacher. Yet, it requires self-restraint and systematic work. The same as in the case of traditional courses.
It is not only an internet coursebook. E-learning may replace most of traditional courses.
Different way
E-learning is a form of teaching and learning by means of modern technologies. It is usually associated with internet courses, yet it may also use CDs, intranet, iPods or mobile phones.
- There are different definitions. It is described as e-teaching, distance learning, e-trainings or education via Internet. Each of these terms depicts some features that are symptomatic of e-learning – says Marek Hyla, Chief Operating Officer at e-learning.pl House off Skills.
The distinguishing feature of e-trainings is the distance from the teacher. It enables teaching people around the world.
- E-learning is commonly used where there is a need to train a large number of people, often from different company departments. Therefore, this form of education is so popular in financial sector – banks, insurance companies and pharmaceutical sector – argues Szymon Janicki from MyNetwork Polska.
Not only the Web
There is a certain stereotype as far as e-learning usage goes. It is thought that it is simply the usage of resources available on the Web which are dubbed e-training or e-course. This misconception of distance education oversimplifies its applications. So, what is e-learning about?
- It is about usage of innovative forms of teaching using computers, mobiles, CDs, television and a whole range of other equipment, provided their usage is justified either in the terms of education or economy – explains Marek Hyla.
Static websites or e-mails may be useful e-learning tools. However, integrated IT systems called Course Management Systems (CMS) are the most commonly used instrument.
- CMS are server based applications, which enable students and teachers to use e-learning tools as well as participation in the courses. They include audio/video files, chat rooms, forums, messengers, interactive quizzes, tools for sending homework and many more – describes Przemys?aw Stencel, Manager of the E-learning Centre at Warsaw School of Social Psychology.
Self-made man
Education via Internet requires strong determination and self-discipline from the student. It is both an advantage and a disadvantage of this form of learning. A student may skip the parts of material he/she has already acquired and revise the ones he/she has not accomplished yet. Students may use the course at any time of the day. However, if the student lacks motivation, the training will produce no effects.
- It is important to be willing to improve one’s skills continuously and look upon the time spent on self-development as an essential part of one’s life. It is indispensable to develop skills of managing problems related to both course content and technical difficulties. Shaping this attitude among e-learning recipients is a real challenge – adds Hyla.
Completion
A few years ago, e-learning was perceived as a supplement. Nowadays, this myth is gone. It is hard to imagine a self-presentation or leadership training without a traditional "real-life" teacher. Nevertheless, it does not mean that e-trainings cannot be applied in the so-called "soft" training issues. They may be an introduction to exercises or a particular field. It is the so-called blended learning.
- Most of the soft trainings encompass both theory and practice. To acquire the former, one may use e-learning tools in the privacy of one’s workstation at individual pace and time before the work with a trainer starts. Development of skills and attitudes using distance education is quite difficult. Therefore, it should be carried out in a training room – emphasizes Marek Hyla.
E-trainings become more and more popular. Pundits claim that we encounter small scale e-learning practices nearly everyday.
- We buy TV sets, which have electronic manuals. Why should we not call them e-trainings? We use mailing lists to find out how to build a house, grow plants or treat children. Why should we not call them distance consultations? We listen to language course CDs. It is also e-learning - says Hyla.
In the Company
Large enterprises, which applied this form of staff training, use it again. For some companies, dissatisfaction with e-learning is a result from their staff’s ignorance towards this form of education. Yet, the training offer is becoming more and more attractive.
- Training departments do not ask anymore if but how enormous will be the benefits of e-learning implementation. For the time being, e-learning constitutes a small part of the training market. However, this market is growing dynamically year after year. It is hard to assess this growth, today – says Janicki.
Barriers
One of the most serious barriers for e-learning is lack of permanent high speed internet access, which is the main training tool. Social awareness is another limitation.
- Many people look upon an e-learning course as an internet coursebook, possibly complemented by interactive tests examining knowledge acquisition. They are afraid that they will lack motivation to continue training in a "dehumanized" environment. Meanwhile, a well-designed e-training offers its participants a lot of opportunities to contact between each other. For instance, they can discuss training related issues on forums or work collectively on tasks and projects – argues Przemys?aw Stencel.
