E-learning terms Definitions

Elearning
Synonymes: Distance learning, computer learning, on-line learning. E-learning can be generally defined as a teaching by means of IT. This description is very general and includes various educational activities (self-studying, on-line lectures, discussions and group work on-line) conducted using various technologies and equipment (training in Internet, company intranet, CDs, portable devices etc.). In e-learning, modern technologies are used at every stage of teaching process, from planning and development of training, through its implementation and distribution, to administrating and results evaluation. Agent
Character that appears in e-training, defined by professionals as Animated Pedagogical Agent or Embodied Conversational Agent. It assists participant, facilitating knowledge and skills acquisition. Appropriate use of Agents in training not only increases its attractiveness, but also positively influences perception and memorization of content.

AICC (Aviation Industry CBT Committee)
International association of professionals who create training systems for aviation industry. AICC formed a standard determining mode of communication between LMS platform and e-training.

Authoring tool
Software that enables creation of e-training. In many cases authoring programs can be used by people without professional programming skills (i.e. Macromedia Authorware).

CBT (Computer Based Training)
Any form of education using computers. Learning materials are usually distributed on CDs.

Instructional Designer
Person responsible for development of e-training who bases on his professional knowledge of teaching and learning process. Instructional designer puts his theoretical expertise in psychology, andragogy and HCI (Human Computer Interaction) into practice of e-learning. His responsibilities include analysis of training needs, defining training goals and its possible limitations, evaluating results etc.

E-learning

In business practice e-learning can be defined as "teaching method that makes use of technology to create, distribute and deliver data, information, training and knowledge in order to increase efficiency of company" (Dublin, 2000).

LMS (Learning Management System)

Professional software for distributing and administrating e-training as well as planning and coordinating educational process. LMS systems are sometimes called LMS or e-learning platforms.

LCMS (Learning Content Management System)
Specialized software for creating, modifying, storing and using learning content. LCMS systems are usually applied in combination with LMS (see above).

Asynchronous learning
Learning process in which students have no real-time contact with each other and - in some cases - also with tutor. This type of education allows students to learn anytime, with preferred intensity and pace.
Learning is conducted by means of materials recorded on CDs, placed on Internet or intranet. Communication between those involved is based on e-mail, discussion group or forum tools.

Synchronous learning
Learning process with real-time contact between students and teacher, based on bi- or multilateral exchange of information. In synchronous learning communication is usually executed by chat, VOIP (Voice Over IP) or videoconference technology.

Training scenario
Comprehensive document with all information required to develop e-training. Scenario includes learning content (information to be acquired by student) as well as detailed description of all training components: reviews, quizzes, tests, animations, graphics etc. Scenario is usually composed by instructional designer.

Open training
This sort of training is designed for wide audience - people of certain profession or age group, sometimes even whole population. Apart from being motivated and meeting specified requirements, access to Internet is the only thing one needs to take part in open training. In case of commercial enterprises - payment of the fee is required.

Closed training
Training of this type are ordered for precisely specified audience by big companies and institutions with purpose of educating their employees. Closed training are very often custom content, so they perfectly match recipients' needs..

SCORM (The Sharable Courseware Object Reference Model)
Standard of e-learning content development which originated from Department of Defense's Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative. E-training elements that meet the SCORM standard can be easily adapted in different software environments - various LMS platforms for example.

WBT (Web Based Training)
Any form of education conducted via Internet or computer network with limited access (intranet, extranet). Learning content usually is to be accessed by web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla etc.)

E-learning content
Resources covering specified area of knowledge, prepared to be distributed in electronic form. They can be delivered as a text, graphics, sound, animation, video etc. and can be arranged in so-called learning modules.
