Blended learning is a combination of two learning methods:
- Traditional training conducted in groups under tutor's supervision
- E-learning training where participants study in private using materials available via computer network (Internet, intranet or extranet)
Below - blended learning as a combination of two learning methods.
Traditional training vs. e-learning
Both traditional and e-training have particular strengths and weaknesses. Any of these methods considered separately cannot meet all training needs of a modern company.
In case of some training (in products, software or theoretical issues for instance) e-learning proves to be the most effective, especially when large group of people is to be trained. In other cases, particularly when considering so-called soft skills (assertiveness, nonverbal communication etc.) traditional training that engage participants and trainer in interaction, may show better results.
Most significant strengths and weaknesses of traditional training include:
Strengths
- Direct communication between
participants and tutor.
- Favorable in case of learning soft skills.
- Opportunity for asking questions,
clarifying doubts and discussing
subjects on the spot.
- Contact with respected authorities and experienced professionals.
|
Weaknesses
- Usually not entire time of training is spent on effective learning.
- Delays in training schedule, problems with getting right group together.
- Impossibility of adjusting message to level of all participants ('one size does not fit all')
- Teaching process may vary depending on tutor, participants, time of day, atmosphere etc.
- Difficulties in monitoring participants' progress and evaluating acquired knowledge.
|
Most significant strengths and weaknesses of e-learning include:
Strengths
- Well-documented efficiency of this learning method.
- Significant decrease in funds spent on training arrangement (no expenditures on travels, hotels, conference rooms etc.)
- Time saved as a result of lack of preparatory activities (no travels, coffee breaks, meals).
- Training can be conducted anytime and anywhere.
- Individual course of teaching adjusted to student's needs and skills.
|
Weaknesses
- High initial costs of the training production, particularly custom content in highly specialized fields of knowledge.
- Need of appropriate IT infrastructure.
- Limited efficiency in soft skills training.
Lack of direct contact between participants.

Blended learning strengths
Blended learning not only combines advantages of traditional and electronic training but also avoids flaws and weaknesses of each of these methods applied separately. Amongst the most prominent blended learning advantages that exceed above-mentioned benefits, following can be indicated:
- E-learning equalizes participants' knowledge, so in course of traditional training they can focus on consolidating gained knowledge, practicing acquired skills as well as forming proper reactions.
- Knowledge from traditional training can be consolidated and tested through proper after-training activities such as electronic reviews and tests.
- Greater flexibility in planning activities and training programs can be achieved due to possibility of updating and modifying electronic study materials easily.
Because of combining two complimentary training methods in optimal way, blended learning allows to train employees in most efficient way, therefore maximizing company benefits and making strategic goals of HR department easier to accomplish.
